You

I think the author was inspired by the loss of someone very dear to him. Not just a friend, but something deeper, almost like a soulmate. Through all the excitement and events, he is still reminded of a single person, and he will never lose the memories of that person.

Lies

Usually when I am caught in a lie I just confess. An example is when I lied to my parents about some stuff I was doing on the weekends. Instead of going to where I told my mom, I went somewhere else. My mom eventually found out and I just confessed.

SAT Week 28

  1. In Night, Elie heralds “ ... an American Tank stood at the gates of Buchenwald” becoming a symbol of hope for the Jews and all other prisoners who were praying for _liberation_ from the hell-like camps.
  2. The H.U.A.C. was used by by senator Joe McCarthy to promote_witch-hunt_ for supposed communists in the United States senate; however, it became more of a means to promote personal vendetta against enemies as opposed to actually looking for communists in the United States Senate.

  4. A martyr is a person who is _persecuted_ for standing up for his or her beliefs even when those beliefs are not popularly accepted by the people in power. One of the most famous examples of a martyr is Joan of Ark, nineteen years old at the time of her death, who after claiming to hear God's voice guide her to fight for France, she was labeled a witch and then burned at the stake. She later received Sainthood by the Catholic church.
  5. Adolf Hitler was not known for being one to _mitigate_ his temper; even during national speeches in Germany, he was known to strike the podium and shout his messages to the point of being incoherent during moments of passionate anger.

Compromises

Compromise of 1850: defused a four-year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North that arose following the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). The compromise, drafted by Whig Henry Clay and brokered by Democrat Stephen Douglas avoided secession or civil war at the time and quieted sectional conflict for four years.

Compromise of 1877: also known as the Corrupt Bargain, refers to a purported informal, unwritten deal that settled the disputed 1876 U.S. Presidential election and ended Congressional ("Radical") Reconstruction. Through it, Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was awarded the White House over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden.

Great Compromise:  was an agreement between large and small states reached during the Constitutional Convention of 1787 that in part defined the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under the United States Constitution. It proposed a bicameral legislature, resulting in the current United States Senate and House of Representatives.

Pronoun POV Practice

Accepting who one is shows gratitude for being born into this world. Changing who one is for the benefit of others is displaying a sense of ungratefulness and lack of self-confidence. Why not be proud of one's identity? Who is to say he or she is nobody just because of his or her skin tone? The person who says it is exposing himself or herself as a hypocrite unworthy of someone's presence.

My dream car is the hippie van, or 1950-60's Volkswagen Type 2. I would want it tie-dye or something like the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo. The inside will only have two front seats and the back will have fur and soft stuff all over the place to "chill".

Muckraker

A muckraker is, primarily, a reporter or writer who investigates and publishes truthful reports involving a host of social issues, broadly including crime and corruption and often involving elected officials, political leaders and influential members of business and industry. Upton Sinclair is considered to be one because he reported on the unsanitary procedures that were going on in factories. I think the most disturbing of the passage was the fact that farmers liked the cows to have tuberculosis because it made them fatter.

American Dream

I don't think it has changed much, except for how it is achieved. In the 20's a lot of people got rich by illegal things, which is still the same today, but now it seems like there is more ways to become "rich" and successful.
