SAT Week 28


  1. In Night, Elie heralds “ ... an American Tank stood at the gates of Buchenwald” becoming a symbol of hope for the Jews and all other prisoners who were praying for _liberation_ from the hell-like camps.
  2. The H.U.A.C. was used by by senator Joe McCarthy to promote_witch-hunt_ for supposed communists in the United States senate; however, it became more of a means to promote personal vendetta against enemies as opposed to actually looking for communists in the United States Senate.
  3. Just before WWII, France and Great Britain adopted a form of _appeasement_ in order to tame the wild beast Germany and its ferocious dictator Hitler by giving them the land they desired—The Sudetenland.
  4. A martyr is a person who is _persecuted_ for standing up for his or her beliefs even when those beliefs are not popularly accepted by the people in power. One of the most famous examples of a martyr is Joan of Ark, nineteen years old at the time of her death, who after claiming to hear God's voice guide her to fight for France, she was labeled a witch and then burned at the stake. She later received Sainthood by the Catholic church.
  5. Adolf Hitler was not known for being one to _mitigate_ his temper; even during national speeches in Germany, he was known to strike the podium and shout his messages to the point of being incoherent during moments of passionate anger.
